Part I: Burnout Prevention

Reconnecting with self through travel

Through pursuing my passion to improve mental wellness in healthcare workers, I see how common it is to experience burnout on a daily basis. Many of my patients do not know why they are feeling the way they are feeling. They don’t realize the culprit is…
B U R N O U T!!!

I share with them that since the pandemic a larger proportion of the general population are more irritable. It doesn’t take much to set people off. The mental health breaks we took for granted in the past, for instance, TRAVEL, were not available at times.

My love for travel began at an early age. Almost every weekend dad made sure to take our whole family to our home town or other neighbouring cities. Those were fun days as it meant we could go places we were otherwise not allowed to visit. For example, we enjoyed the riverside even though we did not actually know how to swim!!

The way to the river is sort of an Eco Trek. We usually went in larger numbers; 6-8 of us siblings and a few relatives. We would stop every now and then to pick fruit from trees like mangoes and Udala (a yellowish orange star fruit with dark seeds and delicious milky juice) from Ukwu Udala. If they were ripe, they’d taste so sweet and heavenly. And sour if unripe as with most fruits. This tree is tropical and usually bears fruit during summer months.

The avocados were also tastier and often larger than those sold in the cities. And I had never seen that many variety of mangoes in the city and I soon learned which ones were my favorite. One was called “opioro mango”. This variety was usually greenish and longer in length, even when ripe. The taste was always excellent and one could hardly go wrong buying it or picking it out. I did not care too much for the other varieties of mangoes after experiencing the “opioro mango”!!

When we stopped at relatives’ houses along our way we had a BLAST – especially during a festive season such as Easter or Christmas. Our parents would never have imagined where we were at or whose house we had gone feasting in!!

I am grateful for travel still today – especially when celebrating a friend’s 40th Birthday in Cancun!! ❤️❤️
